Hand build with clay to make beautiful and whimsical Holiday themed decorations and gifts. Working with Porcelain, and white & dark stoneware clay you will be instructed to make a variety of holiday themed decorations, figures and ornaments - your creativity is encouraged! You will return to glaze in about a week, or I will glaze for you with glazes you choose. Glazing is optional as the porcelain & dark clay are beautiful without glaze. I will also have glass bits (frit) for you to use as added sparkle on your flat pieces.Your Holiday creations will be ready to pick up by December 15th.

PLATE SKILL BUILDING MINI CLASS $160

WEDNESDAY NOV 28th, DEC 5th, 12th, & 19th 10am - 12pm

NOV 29th, DEC 6th, 13th, & 20th 6pm - 8pm FULL

Learn to throw a range of “flat ware” forms on the pottery wheel and develop and improve your wheel throwing skills. Discussion and demos provided for each step. Creativity is encouraged!

Week 1 & 2 - Throwing: Learn about wedging, centering clay to make flatware. Then, opening up, compressing and flattening bases and creating sides / flanges on the form. Create small and large plates, a pie plate, cheese board/trivet and/or cake plate.

Week 2 - Trimming: Learn about drying issues when creating flatware, the correct way to remove, handle and trim flatware to make it the 'right' weight and create foot rings. Add a raised foot, handles and clay embellishments or carvings. Decorate with slips / underglazes.

Week 3 - Glazing: Learn to prepare your flatware for glazing. Various glazing techniques and combinations will be discussed. Learn to apply glaze by brushing and using the wheel as an aid, use of slips and wax to add decoration. IMPORTANT: This course is for those with previous wheel throwing experience.
